Gianni Infantino is a Swiss-Italian lawyer and sports administrator who currently serves as the President of FIFA, the international governing body for association football. Infantino was born on March 23, 1970, in Brig, Switzerland. His parents, Italian immigrants, ran a restaurant in the town. From an early age, Infantino developed a love for football and played the sport whenever he got the chance. He spent most of his childhood in the Valais region of Switzerland, where he played for local clubs and developed his skills as a player.
Gianni’s career in football began in the early 1990s when he started working as a lawyer for UEFA, the administrative body for European football. He rose through the ranks and was eventually appointed as the General Secretary of UEFA in 2009. During his tenure at UEFA, Infantino was involved in several key initiatives, including the creation of the UEFA Nations League and the expansion of the UEFA European Championship.
In 2016, Infantino was elected as the President of FIFA, succeeding Sepp Blatter. He immediately set about implementing reforms aimed at increasing transparency and accountability within the organization. He has also been a strong advocate for expanding the World Cup, and in 2019, FIFA announced that the tournament would be expanded to 48 teams starting from the 2026 edition.
Infantino was re-elected as president of FIFA for four more years, after running unopposed at the congress of world football’s ruling body in 2023. He is set to rule till 2027.
