Unlike last year, there was no rain on the parade this time.
TAMPA, Fla. — A five-decade long tradition in Ybor City returned Saturday night.
The annual Krewe of the Knights of Sant' Yago Knight Parade returned to Ybor City. The event is a celebration of Tampa's rich and vibrant Latin heritage and pride. Flashy floats and bright lights illuminated 7th Avenue.
"We're a great close-knit brotherhood and it's just an honor for me to represent the krewe," said Chris Cubero, this year's El Rey, also known as king.
Crowds roared at the sight of flashy bright lights and yearned for beads to be added to their collection. Knights, pirates, and different characters reminiscent to Gasparilla paraded down 7th Avenue.
Meanwhile, this year's La Reina, known as queen, said she feels honored to take part in a family tradition.
"My dad's been in the krewe for a long time," said La Reina, Quinn Erickson. "I've had a lot of opportunities to participate in different krewe functions so this time I'm the one who gets to wear the crown so I'm excited."
TV personality Steve Wilkos made a special appearance at the parade while WWE Hall of Famer Ric Flair served as the parade grand marshal.
"I love it. I love Tampa," Flair said in response to gracing the parade as the grand marshal. "Tampa's the best. People are so friendly and nice. I've been here three years now. I love the place."
Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw encouraged the public to attend ahead of the parade. He said there would be extra enforcement and additional assistance from multiple agencies including the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office and Florida Highway Patrol.
A Halloween weekend shooting last year that killed two people and injured 16 others tainted the reputation of the historic district, but Bercaw said authorities were ready to respond to any threats.
"I've never experienced a night parade ever. It's awesome," said one visitor from St. Louis, Mo.
Members of the Knights also work all year long to help with students' education. They've raised millions of dollars to date.
